Craft with Oki Pie: A Tool for Brainstorming Contextual Project Ideas in Children’s Makerspaces

Wed, April 8, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This design case introduces a brainstorming tool that helps community makerspace educators plan craft activities for children within limited time. Educators input grade level, interests, and available materials, to receive customized craft prompts with suggested steps. Grounded in constructionism and structured improvisation, the tool offers loose guidelines that create room for productive failure. This study outlines the design rationale of the AI tool based on a survey of makerspace educators. Examples of artifacts are shared, as examples of productive failure in children’s collaboration with makerspace educators based on tentative craft project ideas from the AI tool.
