Examining Various Forms of Violence Target at Black Women and Girls in Educational Spaces

Fri, April 10, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 306B

Abstract

This study examines the various forms of violence Black women and girls encounter in educational spaces. Using the World Health Organization's definition of violence as a guiding framework, this study analyzes both physical and nonphysical violence that Black women and girls encounter in school settings. The findings indicate that misogynoir contributes to physical violence against Black women and girls. Furthermore, Black women and girls are also vulnerable to various forms of nonphysical violence such as structural, symbolic, curriculum, epistemic and institution-sanctioned violence throughout their educational trajectory. This is due to the endemic nature of violence in our society along with the sociocultural practices of dehumanizing and devaluing Black women and girls.
