Abstract

This research project proposes a greater focus on Indigenous pedagogies in African and Caribbean classrooms and the preservation of culture and histories. It offers practical applications of embedding African and Caribbean Indigenous pedagogies into K-12 curriculum and the integration of cultural practices and community engagement. These cultural practices include the use of traditional storytelling, folklore, songs, and dances unique to respective communities and with an emphasis on rebuilding African and Caribbean identities in learning. The authors developed a handbook and a website that equip teachers with the resources and tools needed to make this a reality in their classroom. The responses from teachers have been positive, as some have indicated the transformation their students experienced when immersed in local culture.
