Abstract

This research explores the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ students in rural communities, with a focus on safe spaces in their communities. Conducted by undergraduate researchers with faculty support, the project investigates how safe spaces are formed and sustained in rural environments. Through qualitative surveys and interviews, the study highlights themes of community support, code-switching, and the importance of affirming adults and school-based safe spaces. Despite facing discrimination and isolation, participants identified allies and supportive environments, often centered in educational settings. Findings reveal the critical role these spaces play in identity development and resilience. This work addresses a research gap in rural LGBTQ+ experiences and seeks to promote inclusive community practices and youth advocacy in underrepresented areas.
