Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of video conferencing (VC) in education, yet limited research has examined how VC design features and technological affordances influence student engagement. This scoping review explored VC’s impact across five engagement dimensions: social, cognitive, behavioral, collaborative, and emotional. We examined the distribution of VC platforms and engagement measurements. Subsequently, using thematic analysis, we identified technology constraints and ten key technological affordances, including communicative, feedback, collaborative, record and review, access, socio-emotional, productive, protective, tutorial, and big data affordances. Based on these affordances, this review outlines potential pathways for innovation in VC hybrid education informed by ten technology affordances, including future design considerations and suggestions for improving existing design features for VC learning contexts.
