Abstract

This qualitative case study examines the experiences of refugee students at Global Village Project (GVP), an all girls refugee resettlement middle school in the United States. This study was situated within Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth framework and the research questions are: 1) How do participants describe their experience at GVP? (2) What impact has GVP had on students academically, socially, and emotionally in transitioning to high school and beyond? The participants included 5 alumni and 3 faculty members. The data sources included open-ended interviews and reflexive notes, which were analyzed through open-coding. Findings reveal that GVP fosters students’ agency and confidence, 2) promotes social, emotional and academic growth through a holistic approach, and 3) cultivates a sense of belonging.
