Abstract

Based on the in-depth interviews with 15 Korean immigrant mothers, the study examines how they strategize their children’s education success in negotiation with racial identity. Despite a sizeable body of research on the intersection of racial identity and educational strategies, there is a dearth of research that differentiates between ethnic enclaves and predominantly white suburban neighborhoods, which this study takes up. Two prominent themes emerged: Indifference to racist discourse, and a sense of cultural superiority toward Korean norms. A sense of cultural superiority toward Asian heritage challenges their lower racial status in a system shaped by white supremacy.
