Planning to Plan with Teachers: Coaches’ Aims for Supporting Teachers’ Learning in Co-planning Conversations

Thu, April 9, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Co-planning is a common feature of one-on-one coaching programs; however, research that explores why coaches and teachers discuss particular topics when co-planning is limited. We address this gap by examining 17 coaching cases in which coaches shared their aims for their co-planning conversations with teachers before conducting them. We documented the variation that exists in coaches’ aims for co-planning, identifying four aims that coaches stated: (1) helping teachers make an instructional improvement, (2) supporting teachers to improve lesson planning processes, (3) aiding teachers in selecting higher quality instructional materials and/or tools, and (4) preparing plans for supporting individual students based on assessment data. Specifying these aims has implications for coaching research and practice.
