An Open Secret in Sport: Exploring Mental Health and Coping of Black High School Coaches

Thu, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm PDT (2:15 to 3:45pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, Los Feliz

Abstract

Research on mental health in sports has seen recent growth due to the youth mental health crisis. However, little attention is given to the mental health of coaches, specifically Black coaches. These coaches play a vital role in the lives of youth and may be at greater risk for negative mental health outcomes due to the impacts of systemic oppression and their increased responsibilities as a coach. The current study sought to investigate the rate of burnout, anxiety, and depression in Black high school coaches, mediating effects of coping methods, and moderators of the relationship between burnout, anxiety, and depression. Understanding these factors may assist in establishing necessary support and resources for Black high school coaches.
