Abstract

Documents provide additional dimensions to qualitative classroom-based educational research. However, before including documents within your studies, it is important to consider their unique characteristics. Some traits discussed in this work-in-progress include the organizing characteristics of documents, their production, and how they can be interpreted.

Examining documents in a more holistic manner can broaden the scope of research data and make it more complete, accurate, valid, and reliable. To achieve this goal in this conceptual paper, this work-in-progress examines this theoretical work within a practical setting including the researcher’s work incorporating documents as both a practice within traditional curricular settings and a data source to teach immigration within a social studies context.
