Artificial Intelligence in Community Colleges: Reimagining Teaching, Ethics, and Faculty Work Toward Student Agency

Wed, April 8, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 2nd Floor, Platinum G

Abstract

This session explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping teaching, advising, and faculty roles in community colleges. Guided by Critical Digital Pedagogy and a review of emerging literature, it explores both the promise and challenges of AI for marginalized student populations including first-generation, low-income and racially minoritized student learners. The session examines equity concerns and implementation dilemmas through frameworks for ethical, inclusive use of AI in teaching, advising, and student support services. It offers a rethinking of how AI can be aligned with humanized, culturally responsive practices. The session invites conversations around how faculty, advisors, and institutions can adopt AI tools in ways that affirm agency and care in ways that prioritize student empowerment, critical learning, and community-centered design.
