Abstract

Higher education institutions continue to explore how to best deliver course content for online learners. This study looks at the impact of course format on student engagement, utilizing data from the National Survey of Student Engagement. This conceptual replication of a pre-COVID study sheds light on whether the lessons learned during the pandemic changed the patterns of engagement for students in online courses, now a decade later. Data was analyzed using a series of regression models, controlling for relevant student and institutional characteristics. Compared to the findings from the pre-pandemic study, the results suggest some consistencies, along with some differences. There were numerous significant relationships between course format and student engagement. Faculty should consider these findings when designing online courses.
