Investigating the Impact of Title IX Sexual Harassment Policies on the K-12 Experience

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

As a federally mandated law, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 (Title IX) aims to protect individuals from sexual discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal funding. While prior work has focused on nationally collected data, the current study moves into a qualitative space, evaluating the sexual harassment experiences of former K-12 students. Findings indicate participants' lack of knowledge regarding Title IX protections as well as negative feelings towards the possibility of adult support. Implications highlight gaps in Title IX implementation and suggestions for K-12 campuses.
