This presentation will present the results of a study investigating the critical literacies of a group of Black and Latinx youth participatory action researchers (Mirra et al, 2016). I utilize poetic analysis of data to viscerally render the ways that their critical literacies were driven by emotions like care and disappointment, and used in their everyday work of resisting racial injustice they encountered in and beyond school. The purpose of this analysis is to disrupt deficit conceptions of the literacies of youth of color and use asset lenses of literacy to uplift their literate genius. I will also connect their critical literacy work to long traditions of using literacy to resist in communities of color.
