Abstract

The past year has challenged U.S. PK-20 public schools’ reliance on federal arts funding with severe budget cuts that have lessened or eliminated visual and performing arts classes in local, state, and national educational settings. Yet, research has shown arts education programs to be distinct models of learning that support and nurture student well-being and prosocial behavior, as well as fostering student engagement in school. This Arts and Inquiry SIG presentation provides a model for a conceptualized Performing Arts Curriculum Framework (PACF) that could be adapted for deeper learning high schools of the future. The researcher’s positionality is that arts-based education be increased and not reduced, and that domain-specific arts courses are essential curricula for maximizing student potential.
