Drawing from justice-oriented design-based research on the Underground Education Network’s Hip Hop as Humanities Summer Institute, this paper examines how interventions grounded in the Hip Hop (W)righting Framework (HHWF) supported in-service ELA and History teachers in designing culturally sustaining learning experiences that push back against the “war on woke.” Through qualitative analysis of institute artifacts, we demonstrate how the HHWF empowered teachers to interrogate dominant discourses, reflect on their identities, challenge hegemonic notions of curriculum and instruction, and connect “teaching work” to justice work. Findings are salient to Division K, Section 6’s theme as we illustrate how honoring Hip Hop’s educational roots and cultivating teaching futures through fugitive approaches to professional development work to reimagine teacher education.
