“In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength”: Resistance and Reclamation of Asian American Teachers’ Truths within the Social Studies

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This critical qualitative study investigates the hegemonic and official school curriculum’s intent to negate stories of civic representations, resistance and belonging of Asian Americans. However, through several tenets of AsianCrit and Holland et al.’s figured worlds analysis, we investigate how dominant narratives can be disrupted and dismantled by social studies teacher education candidates that engage their own personal histories and enact critical pedagogical content knowledge and critical pedagogical practices.
