Abstract

Video blogs (vlogs) offer engaging opportunities for informal language learning by exposing learners to authentic language use and cultural content. However, little is known about how learners engage with vlogs and what motivates their use. This study developed and validated instruments to assess vlog-assisted informal language learning (VAILL) use and motivation, grounded in interview data. Based on responses from 503 Chinese EFL learners, we conducted item analysis, EFA, and CFA. The VAILL-Use scale (13 items) included content consumption, interactive participation, and transformative learning. The VAILL-Motivation scale (14 items) included authenticity, expertise, interactivity, and culture immersion. Both scales showed strong reliability and validity. This study provides validated tools to advance research and practice in informal language learning.
