CROSS Cultures: Exploring the Roles of Generative AI in Enhancing Multicultural Education

Abstract

This study examines how generative AI (GenAI) can enhance multicultural education by developing a novel CROSS curriculum (Cultural Lectures, Real-world Exploration, Observational Reflection, Script Writing, and Synthesizing) with GenAI implemented with 11 diverse Chinese-language students. Through mixed-methods analysis, we found GenAI effectively promotes intercultural communicative competence (ICC) by serving as a knowledge facilitator, skills enhancer, and attitude influencer. The technology also supported multilingual expression through personalized feedback and bilingual co-creation, while deepening cultural understanding by sensitizing students to cultural nuances and identities. These findings demonstrate GenAI’s potential to foster inclusive learning environments by enhancing intercultural competence and empathy. The study provides educators with practical strategies for leveraging GenAI to create more engaging and culturally-responsive educational experiences.
