Abstract

The reform of the teacher qualification examination system is crucial for enhancing the professionalization of the teaching workforce, yet its impact on the college admission of teaching-track students remains unknown. This study takes the abolition of exemption from qualification examinations for normal school students in 2011 as a natural experiment, using difference-in-differences and event study methods with data on college admission scores in Beijing. The Findings show an initial decline in average admission scores for teacher education programs, particularly in core and science subjects. Lower-scoring candidates rationally chose college majors related with teacher education, while higher-scoring candidates diversified their choices, potentially infusing diverse talent into the teaching workforce.
