Abstract

This self-study examines how to go beyond knowledge and skills acquisition and holistically cultivate the inner qualities of general education preservice teachers so that they can better serve English Language Learners. Data sources, such as reflective journal entries and student feedback, were coded and thematically analyzed using the theoretical framework of Daisaku Ikeda’s definition of global citizenship characterized by the capacities of wisdom, compassion, and courage. The author presents representative examples from her course that cultivated these three inner qualities in her students, and how this self-study helped her grow as a teacher educator. This study illustrates how teacher educators can examine their own perspectives and practices to create a more equitable and holistic education for all students.
