Abstract

Tasks such as classwork and homework assigned by teachers to students are an important part of students’ learning. As K-12 students are gaining increasing access to generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI), discussions about whether and how to incorporate it into classroom tasks have become unavoidable. This study provides an important part of this discussion through investigation into K-12 teachers’ perceptions of Gen AI. We explore both their expectations and concerns, as well as the reasons behind their perspectives. We look into how teachers navigate Gen AI in practice by drawing from their classroom experiences and interviews. By centering teachers’ voices, we identify key considerations and support needed for meaningfully integrating Gen AI into student tasks in K-12 education.
