Abstract

This study developed and validated a culturally responsive 35-item SEL scale for elementary students. The scale construction followed a rigorous process, including in-depth interviews with 22 in-service teachers to identify and develop indicators primarily based on the CASEL framework. A two-phase validation was then conducted: exploratory factor analysis (n = 586) and confirmatory factor analysis (n = 1,163). Different from the original 5-dimensional CASEL framework, evidence collected in the current study indicates a 7-dimensional structure with strong model fit (RMSEA = .037) that includes emotional awareness, self-identity, emotional regulation, self-discipline, social awareness, interpersonal interaction, and responsible decision-making. This research provides a robust, empirically grounded tool for assessing SEL in Taiwanese contexts and offers broader implications for culturally responsive educational practices.
