Abstract

This study investigates the use of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in Indonesian higher education, focusing on students’ engagement with genAI tools and their perceptions of its benefits and drawbacks. The aim is to identify which genAI technologies are being used, for what academic purposes, and how students evaluate their impact. Employing a mixed-methods, cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 902 students across 113 public and private higher education institutions in Indonesia. The survey integrated both quantitative and qualitative components to address three key research questions. The findings highlight widespread student engagement with genAI, shaped by educational needs, access, and personal attitudes, offering insights for educators and policymakers aiming to navigate pedagogical integration of genAI technologies in higher education.
