Abstract

This systematic review examines why and how the arts are integrated into elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, with a focus on the purposes of integration, the types of arts used, and modes of integration. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 25 peer-reviewed empirical studies from 2016 to 2025 were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that the arts were primarily integrated to foster 21st-century skills, often serving as a supportive function rather than being valued for their contributions. This review also identified an expanded definition of the arts in STEAM, including non-traditional forms. These findings highlight the need for more intentional arts integration to support deeper disciplinary connections.
