Abstract

Dehumanization, the perception of others as lacking humanness, has garnered attention due to its harmful effects. Those who dehumanize often show less prosocial behavior, negatively impacting public policies, while victims face mental health challenges. Research has shown dehumanization affects various groups, including ethnic minorities and the socioeconomically disadvantaged, but students with special educational needs (SEN) have received limited focus. This study utilizes the Dual Model of Dehumanization to explore dehumanization towards SEN students. Surveys of 118 SEN students, 274 parents, 141 teachers, and 220 non-SEN peers revealed that dehumanization is commonly perceived by non-SEN peers, parents, and teachers, highlighting the need for solutions in the Chinese context.
