Reinterpreting Photovoice: Exploring young children’s Environmental Concerns in India

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 306B

Abstract

This study attempts to reinterpret Photovoice by integrating Kolb’s Participatory Photo Interview with the educational philosophies of Tagore and Gandhi. It aims to explore young children’s perceptions of environmental concerns in India, by offering a contextually situated, child-centered approach grounded in a blended interpretivist-constructivist paradigm. This method with its structured, developmentally appropriate, and locally situated phases invites young children to express their lived experiences and environmental understandings. The study provides a fresh lens, an alternative perspective to a widely used Western method, thereby, adding a rich and pluralistic layer emphasizing children’s voices from the Global South and aligning with AERA’s 2026 theme of envisioning just and inclusive futures.
