Abstract

Students with a growth mindset tend to persevere, focus on mastery, and use deeper learning strategies. These benefits make it crucial to study how growth mindset works in real classrooms. However, existing research on growth mindset has three major limitations: (1) predominant use of variable-centered methods that may mask distinct student subgroups, (2) tendency to treat mindset as domain-general without examining subject-specific variations (e.g., math vs. language), and (3) focus on individual-level analysis while neglecting school-level mindset climates that influence student outcomes. This study uses a person-centered approach to identify distinct growth mindset profiles at student and school levels, while considering domain-specific beliefs across subjects. This provides deeper insight into how mindset functions within and between students and schools.
