From Silenced Histories to Empowered Futures: Palestinian Narratives in Israeli Academia

Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 2

Abstract

This project centers the silenced voices of Palestinians internally displaced in 1948 by engaging Palestinian-Israeli college students in reclaiming their collective history. Over three years, students conducted and edited interviews with displaced individuals and reflected on the experience. Analysis of 75 reflections revealed an emerging historical awareness, a deepened sense of belonging, and a desire to further explore their heritage. In the context of Israeli academia, where Palestinian students’ identities are often marginalized, this work fostered critical engagement and cultural empowerment. By challenging dominant narratives and reclaiming historical presence, students asserted their right to memory and identity. The project highlights the transformative potential of education to cultivate informed, inclusive citizenship and promote social justice for all, not just the majority.
