Abstract

As studies are necessary to understand how leadership practices unfold in specific contexts, our paper aims to examine the practices of school leaders in under-resourced yet academically successful elementary schools in the Philippines. In-depth interviews were conducted with five principals from elementary schools located in different regions of the country that obtained high scores in the Grade 6 National Achievement Test. Analysis of the interview data yielded the following themes regarding the participants’ leadership practices: 1) prioritizing positive student outcomes; 2) emphasis on staff development (with the sub-themes: mentorship and consultative practices, leadership development, and modelling and involved leadership); 3) stakeholder engagement and community partnerships; and 4) practicing transparency and accountability. Implications for school leadership practice were discussed.
