Abstract

This paper reports on the analysis of mathematical writing from a series of online professional development workshops we created as part of the EnCoMPASS project a 5-year NSF project. The work has grown out of work that began when we were part of The Math Forum. The Math Forum, which ran from about 1996-2018, created an online platform where students could submit their written solutions to problems and get written feedback from staff creating an exchange of mathematical ideas. Data analysis sheds light on how focusing on students written solutions to math problems supports teachers to thinking about the process of thinking that went into the student’s solution and how best to continue a mathematical conversation with the student.
