Abstract

This current study explored how the unique context of California Title I high schools shapes counselors’ approaches to advising undocumented students, particularly regarding college options and financial aid. We conducted 20 interviews to examine school counselors’ approach to college and financial aid advising. California serves as an ideal context for this study where both the undocumented student population and student-to-counselor ratios are high. We found that counselors presented the FAFSA and California Dream Act simultaneously to students, worked closely with undocumented students on their college and financial aid applications, discussed fears and myths about the college-going process, and ultimately encouraged undocumented students to explore their college options.
