Abstract

This qualitative multiple case study examines the educational impact of K–12 esports programs in 13 schools supported by a university-led initiative. Findings show that esports fosters student engagement, builds 21st-century skills, and promotes inclusivity, especially for those underserved by traditional extracurriculars. Drawing on participatory culture, connected learning, and sociocultural identity theory, the study explores how esports participation shapes student identity, belonging, and post-secondary aspirations. Data from student and educator interviews, documents, and observations reveal that esports offers a meaningful platform for academic and personal growth. This research highlights the value of integrating students’ digital cultures into schooling and provides evidence for the transformative potential of esports as a culturally responsive, interest-driven learning environment.
