How Professional Experience Shapes Reflection in a MOOC on Generative AI and Learning Experience Design

Abstract

This study explores how MOOC learners—students and working professionals—reflect on the potential role of Generative AI for learning experience design practice. We analyzed discussion posts where learners describe how Generative AI could support early and late stage design tasks. To examine connections across responses, we created an Epistemic Network Analysis model to quantify and visualize how ideas co‑occurred within learners’ discussion posts. Both groups mirrored instructor ideas introduced in lecture videos. Students and professionals elaborated on instructor-provided ideas, but professionals also made connections to their work contexts, suggested novel applications, and reflected on the overall impact of GenAI tools. Our study can inform how design educators can be responsive to the differentiated needs of novice and professional learners.
