Fri, April 10, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This qualitative study delves into the dynamics of family support in career development through a multi-generational lens. Semi-structured interviews with 29 families—comprising mothers, fathers, and young adults were conducted. Content analysis revealed new forms of family support such as trust and appreciation. Findings highlight the diverse support modes offered by mothers and fathers, with mothers typically providing more emotional support and fathers offering more financial support and information. Three family support styles were identified: "Attuned" (aligned with the young adult’s needs), "conditional" (based on obedience), and "detached" (without engaging in dialogue). These results emphasize the importance of considering multiple support facets in research and counseling and the need to differentiate between support types provided by mothers and fathers.
