Abstract

This study explores how a Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tool, CoIEP, combined with a collaborative instructional decision-making process, can support special and general education teachers in designing evidence-based mathematics instruction that integrates opportunities for students with disabilities (SWDs) to foster metacognitive engagement. This collaborative approach responds to the call to address ongoing debates around effective mathematics instruction for SWDs from special and mathematics education communities, focusing on the role of metacognition, as it supports all students as mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. We discuss how CoIEP assists educators in identifying evidence-based instruction for SWDs. Additionally, we detail the development and applications of the decision-making process for systematically integrating relevant metacognitive components into CoIEP-generated mathematics instructional suggestions.
