Abstract

This study reports findings from a quasi-experimental study designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Summer Academy for Integrated Language Learning (SAILL), an expanded learning opportunity with integrated supports for ELD that is offered to newcomer English learners to increase access to high-quality academic coursework. Propensity score matching was used to compare schoolyear achievement, progress, and language outcomes of two cohorts of SAILL students to matched students who opted to not participate in the five-week program. As hypothesized, SAILL students attained higher fall GPA scores (g = 0.28) and were more likely to attain or retain on-track status for graduation (gCox = 0.43). Unexpectedly, the program did not have an effect on the state assessment for English language proficiency.
