Seeking Help: Exploring Mental Health Experiences and Healthcare Service Awareness

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 304A

Abstract

Mental healthcare needs are growing, yet awareness of available services remains limited, as in Texas. This study explored the relationship between mental health experiences or diagnoses and awareness of community-based mental health or crisis services. Using a descriptive-correlational design, 500 Houston-area residents were surveyed. Analysis revealed participants with previous mental health experiences or diagnoses were more aware of available services. However, awareness varied across groups, with notable gaps among minorities. The findings underscore the need for increased awareness of mental healthcare services, particularly in underserved communities. Policymakers and mental healthcare leaders should integrate lived-experience-informed practices, engage mental healthcare advocates in outreach, and fund targeted interventions to address disparities in awareness of community-based mental health or crisis services.
