Abstract

University and school district partnerships are powerful when embedded in community. Education can be strengthened by scholarship that emerges from partnerships between universities and their community partners, particularly those informed by community-engaged humanizing pedagogy (CEHP). CEHP is a community-centered, co-constructed, humanizing approach to curriculum design, pedagogical practice, and research, with the aim of meeting the needs of diverse communities. This research study (a) introduces the construct of CEHP through a definition and identification of five facets; (b) describes the enactment of CEHP through a university-school district partnership known as the Striving for Excellence Program (SEP); (c) highlights the impact of CEHP on student and teacher outcomes; and (c) shares lessons learned from CEHP that can center community in futuring education.
