Abstract

To advance understanding of how collaborative groups progress toward productive engagement, we investigate the temporality of group engagement across a project-based learning science unit using multiple methods. We aim to explore fluctuations in engagement at both proximal and longer time scales for understanding progress over time. Our theorizing of group disciplinary engagement, conceptualized as shared co-negotiated engagement norms, grounds this research. Data sources include observational quality ratings using multimodal data, and assigned along five engagement dimensions, for our in-depth longitudinal study of four case groups. Multilevel dynamic structural equation modeling describes group-specific patterns of engagement across the unit, alongside visual representations of ratings and case analyses. Results reveal a primary role of disciplinary engagement serving as a hook for productive engagement.
