Breaking Barriers or Reinforcing Them? A Meta-Synthesis of Mentorship Experiences Among Underrepresented STEM Undergraduates

Thu, April 9, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Despite national efforts to diversify STEM, historically marginalized students, particularly racially minoritized students, continue to face structural barriers that hinder their academic persistence. This meta-synthesis integrates findings from 26 qualitative and mixed-methods studies to explore how research mentorship affects underrepresented students in STEM. Thematic analysis revealed six core themes: identity and representation, communication style and frequency, peer support, systemic challenges, negative mentoring, and positive mentoring. Findings demonstrate that culturally responsive mentorship fosters persistence and a sense of belonging, while negative or misaligned mentorship can perpetuate exclusion. Recommendations are provided to guide institutional change and build more equitable STEM environments.
