The marked increase in legislation seeking to restrict and deny protections and rights to individuals identifying within the LGBTQIA+ community, especially transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse individuals (TNG), fueled the impetus of this study. We aim to explore and analyze the policies and legislation passed in the 11 states within the Western region of the United States since 2021 regarding gender and sex within the sphere of K-12 youth and education. We utilize the Master Narrative framework (McLean & Syed, 2015) to analyze how these policies uphold or resist the inherent master and alternative narratives as they relate to TNG individuals.
