Environmental Indicators of Engagement Tool: Development, Preliminary Technical Adequacy, and Initial Field Experiences

Wed, April 8, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This study investigated the preliminary technical adequacy and utility of the Environmental Indicators of Engagement (EIE) tool. Promoting and assessing the engagement of students with disabilities are crucial for realizing Rightful Presence. Initial analyses revealed EIE’s acceptable reliability for effectively distinguishing classroom environments characterized by instructional conditions and activities conducive to higher engagement for dynamic learners. Four factors collectively accounted for 71.86% of the total variance: instructional resources, curriculum standards, learner engagement, and communication. Preliminary feedback on usability and feasibility is positive, guiding ongoing tool refinement. Continuous data collection will further update these results.

Keywords: rightful presence, meaningful engagement, dynamic learners
