In this presentation, we discuss the findings of a practitioner inquiry project focused on storytelling workshops with newcomer students, their families, and elementary educators. We analyze their responses to composition and design activities using Generative AI (GenAI) tools to create images. We draw from frameworks addressing the complexity and intersectionality of the transnational identities of newcomer immigrants, to examine the affordances and limitations of GenAI tools in generating accurate visual self-representation of their experiences. Findings illustrate the instructional practices and inquiry questions enacted by researcher-practitioners in interactions with children and caregivers, as well as their sensemaking of AI-errors across languages, cultural, and religious practices.
