This study investigates how AI-supported discussion platforms influence students’ participation and social presence in asynchronous online learning. Guided by the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, we compare Packback—featuring automated AI feedback—with Canvas, a traditional LMS forum. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, we analyzed four consecutive forums and student reflections. Poisson Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) results showed that Packback users posted significantly less and demonstrated lower levels of affective and cohesive presence, with no significant difference in interactive presence. Qualitative findings suggested that Packback’s AI features reduced perceived authenticity and peer connection. These results highlight that AI feedback alone may not foster social engagement; rather, platform design and student perceptions critically shape online interaction.
