Abstract

This scoping review synthesizes empirical evidence on the consequences of mental fatigue among online college students. Guided by a systematic protocol and PICOS criteria, 20 peer-reviewed studies were analyzed. Findings revealed six primary consequence domains: physical, cognitive, psychological, academic, social, and technology-related. Cognitive and psychological effects were the most frequently reported, followed by physical and academic consequences. The review highlights the multidimensional and interconnected nature of mental fatigue's impacts, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding how mental fatigue affects learning and well-being, offering direction for future research and institutional strategies to support student well-being and success in digital learning environments.
