Abstract

Observation Protocols are used to collect observational data from the classroom, which can aid in identifying what teachers are doing in the classroom. The Teacher Observation Protocol for 3D Science (TOPS) is designed to observe three-dimensional science instruction in secondary classrooms. This instrument was designed for use by teachers, researchers, and instructional coaches to facilitate self-reflection and professional development, thereby improving their science teaching. Comprising five sections: Background Information, Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science & Engineering Practices, Cross-Cutting Concepts, and Integration & Phenomenon, the TOPS gathers evidence to support the observation, facilitating follow-up discussion between the observer and the observed. The TOPS is unique in its use to observe teachers and their implementation of 3D science in the secondary classroom.
