Intermediate Level Practices That Support Principal Instructional Leadership: A Systematic Literature Review

Thu, April 9, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This systematic literature review explores how the intermediate level can foster the development of instructional leadership in principals through coaching. The methodology included the identification, selection, review, and inclusion of 10 academic articles, using PRISMA. Findings indicate that the most effective practices of the middle tier level include maintaining a focus on teaching and learning, supporting mentoring through inquiry, promoting reflection through mobilizing questions, using data, and establishing professional relationships based on trust. Furthermore, conditions that favor these practices are identified, such as collaborative work with principals, reflection of middle tier level, articulation of improvement goals between schools and districts, and time for mentoring. The review emphasizes the multiplicity and complexity of practices necessary for principal coaching.
