Abstract

We developed a Korean version of the motivational regulation strategy (MRS) instrument for measuring non-traditional students’ motivational regulation in online distance courses. Multiple analyses for validity and reliability were conducted with two random sub-samples (n1 = 305, n2 = 306). Exploratory factor analysis supported a five-factor model of the MRS instrument, and confirmatory factor analysis verified the internal structure of the MRS with five factors including goal orientation, interest enhancement, performance approach, performance avoidance, and behavioral reinforcement. Structural equation modeling with the entire sample (n = 611) showed evidence for predictive validity. The factors of the MRS influenced by learning presence significantly predicted the different levels of non-traditional students’ academic procrastination in distance learning.
