Abstract

This study explores conceptions of principal learning in Hong Kong, examining how leadership development supports school leaders in navigating complex and evolving challenges. Drawing on interviews with 15 principals, the research highlights the significance of mentorship, diverse learning experiences, and on-the-job development. While structured programs provide foundational support, principals identify gaps between formal learning opportunities and the realities of leadership practice. The study reveals how principals actively seek learning opportunities to address policy shifts, student needs, and systemic pressures. These findings offer insights into the alignment of professional learning with leadership demands and contribute to international discussions on principal preparation, policy responsiveness, and school improvement.
